Jammu
has a scenic setting because it stands on the
banks of River Tawi, and is situated on a hillock.Surrounded
by lakes, hills and ancient temples, it has
a great artistic traidtion.Jammu is the winter
capital of the State of Jammu and Kashmir and
is the gateway to the Kashmir Valley.Jammu is
also the railhead for Srinagar.
No record is available of the History of the
area before the 18th Century.According to legend,
the city of Jammu was founded by Raja Jamboolochan
who lived in 9th Century.Very little information
is available about the succeeding regimes until
Raja Ranjit Deva, Son of the Raja Dhruv Deva,
a Dogra Chief of Rajput descent, proclaimed
himself the ruler of the principality of Jammu
in 1730 AD.In 1832 Gulab Singh merged Jammu
and Kashmir into one state under the Dogra Rule,
which aceeded to India in 1947.
There are Tourist Reception Offices at the Railway
Station and in the Centre of the City.
