SRINAGAR
Srinagar,
the State Capital, is situated at an altitude
of 1,730 metres above sea level. An ancient
city steeped in the legend and history
dating back to the BC era.Srinagar today
is a resort for tourists to experience
the magical beauty of the valley that
attracted visitors from all over the world
since time immemorial.
Srinagar is connected to the world by
an all-weather road to Jammu, which inturn
is connected to many parts of Northern
India.Srinagars nearest railhead is Udhampur
which in turn connects to all parts of
India including Delhi,Calcutta, Mumbai,etc.And
last but not the least Srinagar has a
well developed Airport(the airport will
be soon converted into International airport).
Srinagar is a unique city because of its
lakes - The Dal,Nagin and Anchar.The river
Jhelum also flows through a part of the
Srinagar city.
OLD SRINAGAR CITY
With its almost medieval charml the old
City of Srinagar has sights, smells and
sounds to enchant the most jaded traveller,
its labbyrinthine roads and bustling bazaars
are a photographers delight.Burqa clad
figures on their way to the City's man
mosques, burnt brick buildings with their
rich warm color, these are but some of
the Old City's moods which will linger
in the corners of your mind long after
you leave Kashmir.
Sprawling southwards from the base of
the hill crowned by Hari Parbat fort,
the old Srinagar city is the nerve centre
of Srinagar.Locked in the heart of Srinagar,
seldom seen by visitors,it embodies the
essence of Kashmir - the 'real kashmir'
as it were.It is a part of Srinagar that
has endured, more or less in its present
form, for centuries.
Lending the area its vitality is undoubtedly
the presence of the river Jhelum which
flows through it.Srinagar has, for long, been
Kashmir's most important commercial town
and when considers that boats have always
been a primary means of conveyance in
Kashmir, it is not difficult to see why.In
time, the city formed around the banks
of the river.
Today, the presence of the river Jhelum
has become an integral part of the old
city, despite the facts that boats are
no longer so extensively used as a means
of conveyance.Nine bridges span the River
Jhelum and many more tiny ones intersect
the network of waterways that flow through
the old city, imparting its distinctive
character.
Roads in the old Srinagar city tend to
be narrow and winding - and chaotic. Some
are too narrow to admit vehicluar traffic. Each
road connects to lanes and they in turn
to bye-lanes, all appearing,to the uninitiated,
terribly confusing.There are arterial
raods, however, and major market squares
where it is difficult to get lost!
The old city also conceals within its
maze, Kashmiri's many ancient shrines
and mosques among which Shah-i-Hamdan,Makhdoom
Sahib, Patther Masjid, Jama Masjid and
Pir Dastagir are the most prominent.
